Fall 2011 Conference

Illuminating Our Future

OAGEE 2011OAGEE Region 7 York-Durham looks forward to your participation at the Fall 2011 conference to be held at St. Andrew's College in Aurora from Nov.11-12, 2011.

Our conference theme, "Remembering the Past — Illuminating Our Future," illustrates both the proud foundations of our discipline and a bright future for geographic and environmental education in the province.

The theme also hints at both the conference location and date. The campus venue is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, a remnant of ancient glaciation. The town name of Aurora, a mythological goddess of dawn bringing fresh light to the world, reflects how geography and earth systems studies bring new outlooks and skills to understand our world. Remembrance Day activities will also be included in the schedule.

Highlighted for presentations and workshops will be the revised curriculum for elementary and secondary geography in Ontario, Specialist High Skills Major programs, physical geography, geotechnology, strategies for ecological awareness, urban issues, social justice and global citizenship, and resources.

Preferred accommodation has been arranged with hotels in Aurora and Newmarket. Co-Chairs Bert Duncan of Markville Secondary School ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and David Joiner of St. Andrew's College ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You will also hear how social media and citizen engagement is helping to shape Vision 2051, an initiative that represents a new blueprint for the Region's future. Finally, you will discover how the Region's cutting edge Geomatics Branch is using geospatial technologies such as 3D GIS and web mapping to model future growth scenarios and empower local communities with accurate and up-to-date spatial information. Teaching resources for Civics and the GIS curriculum will be available for all participants.

This field trip, lead by Jim Tree, Aurora Parks Manager, will feature a tour of the new board walk and trail in the McKenzie Wetland where reconstruction has reduced wetland loss and enhanced wildlife protection. The field trip will also highlight a visit to the new permeable parking lot at Sheppard's Bush's where recycled glass mixed with a bonding agent permits the passage of water to the ground without other contaminants such as motor oil.

Oak Ridges Moraine Hike (ST02)
Saturday, November 12, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm ($15)

OAGEEFall2011FTOak01The Oak Ridges Moraine is an environmentally sensitive, geological landform in south central Ontario that covers 190,000 hectares. The hike will begin at Mary Lake and end with a visit to Pine Farms Orchard and Winery. There will be discussions of the local geography, the ecological functions of the Moraine and the impacts of advocacy and legislation on this special region. At Pine Farms Orchard and Winery you will have the opportunity to purchase some treats from the bakery.
