I am excited to be one of the Kingston-Rideau Regional Representatives for OAGEE for this year.  The first meeting occurred on Saturday Sept 26th and it was an informative day for me.  I will be trying to promote geography in Kingston and the surrounding areas.  At present I am attempting to produce a list of all elementary and secondary geography teachers through contacting central board offices.

Some news from the region:  Kingston high school students participated in the Queen’s University Health and Human Rights Conference on Oct 3rd.  This was the first time this conference was open to high school students and it was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about global issues.  After participating in this informative day, it is highly recommended that teachers and students take advantage of this opportunity next year.

One organization that presented at the conference was QPID – Queen’s Project on International Development.  They organized two workshops entitled: What is Development and Making the Connection.  Both were well received by the students.  This extraordinary organization is made up of Queen’s students.  Among the many activities that they do each year, they also promote developmental issues to youth.  QPID runs a high school conference in March and this is an extraordinary opportunity for students.  If you are interested in having this organization present to your senior geography classes, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Also, if you do not have an OAGEE membership, it is highly recommended as you receive countless resources in the Monograph (published 4 times/year).

I will continue to put updates on the website dealing with geography events and resources available.  I look forward to this new position and hope that I can be of assistance to you.  If you have any questions or concerns or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Brenda Scarlett
